Getting Familiar with the Major Components of a Roof

Last updated 9 months ago

A well maintained roof can protect your home from just about any type of weather phenomenon. However, your roof will need regular visits from a professional to maintain its top performance. It helps to know a bit more about your roof when discussing repairs with a remodeling technician, so check out the following definitions.

• Asphalt Shingles: Shingles are typically the most visible part of your roof. These roofing materials take their dark color from the many tiny granules that line the surface of the shingle. These granules, along with the durable shingles beneath, help to protect your home from solar heat and intense UV radiation. High-end shingles also provide defense against heavy rains and hail damage.

• Metal Flashing: Near or just under the roof’s shingles are angled metal pieces. These metal components, known as flashing, help to divert waters away from the roofing beneath your shingles. Properly installed flashing helps to improve your roof’s waterproof seal as well. Committing to regular roof maintenance visits will help to ensure that your flashing is always in good repair.

• Membrane: Underlayment: Beneath the shingles and flashing is another layer of waterproof material. Like shingles and flashing, this black sheet helps to protect your home from the weather. Underlayment also serves as a shield against mold growth and other consequences of moisture intrusion.

• Protective Trim: The sides and seams of your roof are especially vulnerable to damage and leaks. That’s why roof seams are protected by a sturdy trim. Keep trim in good repair to prevent further damage to the sides and ends of your roof. In addition, the color of your trim can enhance the decorative elements of your home exterior.
